All figures are drawn live from Recent Contract Awards on NYC Open Data (dataset qyyg-4tf5), the City Record's public notice of contract awards, maintained by the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services. The dataset is updated daily; this page queries it directly every time it loads, so what you see is the current public record.

What counts as an award

Each record is a contract award notice published in the City Record. Dollar values are the contract amounts as published at award. An award notice comes before contract registration with the Comptroller and well before any payment. It measures demand entering the market rather than cash out the door.

A single procurement can be published as more than one notice. To avoid counting the same award twice, notices are deduplicated to one record per procurement (the City Record pin), keeping the largest published contract amount for that procurement. Every dollar total on this page is computed on that deduplicated set, the same rule used across the “Funnel”, “Briefing”, and “Contractors” pages.

Scope

The index covers the two construction categories in the City's procurement taxonomy: Construction/Construction Services (hard construction) and Construction Related Services (design, engineering, construction management). The scope control above lets you view either or both. Awards with no positive published value are excluded.

Geography

The source data does not carry a structured borough field. The Concrete Index derives borough from the award's title and description text. Awards referencing multiple boroughs are shown as multi-borough; awards with no borough reference, typically citywide programs or requirements contracts, are shown as citywide / unspecified.

Award types and sizes

The type control separates new awards from continuations, renewals of existing contracts, identified by the published selection method. New awards measure fresh demand reaching the market; continuations measure work staying in place. The size control excludes awards of $500M and above, so trend readings aren't dominated by a handful of megaprojects.

Work-type tags

The work-type filter tags each award by keyword matching on its public short title. Tags are non-exclusive, so one award can carry several (a garage HVAC job is both mechanical and a building). They are descriptive aids, not official classifications. Titles that carry no work-type keyword at all are shown as Uncategorized (– of awards in the current window, before this filter is applied), most often a professional-services, IT, or design contract with no physical scope named.

The headline awarded total above includes everything by default: new work, continuations, and megaprojects. The composite index on the “Analysis” page and the trailing-year award figure on the “Briefing” page strip all three out to isolate the cycle in new work, so their trailing-twelve totals read lower than this one. Both bases are correct for their purpose.

The funnel

Awards are the middle of the capital flow. The “Pipeline” page tracks the stage before this one: dollars the City has committed to capital projects that haven't yet reached the market.

Coverage

The dataset extends back to 2003. The Concrete Index presents the trailing five years, where publication practice is consistent and comparable.
